Politicians exploit Mau riots

Lucknow: Upset and irked over the ban of his entry in riot-affected areas of Mau, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Salman Khursheed alleged here on 23 October that he was not allowed to visit the curfew-bound areas of Mau as he sees a conspiracy of the ruling Samajwadi Party into the communal riots in Mau.
Demanding an inquiry by an independent agency into the communal riots, Khursheed has threatened to launch a satyagrah if the district administration of Mau does not allow him to visit the strife-torn areas. He asked the state government to clarify whether the leaders of the ruling Samajwadi Party were allowed to visit Mau and if so why Congress leaders have been denied permission to visit the affected areas. The state Congress chief confirmed that he received a letter of the district administration of Mau in which his entry into Mau has been banned. He would wait for two days to chalk out his strategy, Salman Khusheed told newsmen here.
The Director General of Police Yashpal Singh has said that the district administration of Mau has imposed restrictions on the visit of the UP Congress chief Salman Khursheed due to some reasons. He has clarified that entry of the political leaders into Mau has been banned into riot-affected areas and that only the district administration could decide the visit of political leaders. The district administration has requested the state unit Congress chief to postpone his visit for the sake of peace, the DGP told newsmen in Lucknow. He claimed that normalcy was returning to the town. The DGP said that raids were conducted in Lucknow to arrest the local MLC from Mau Mukhtar Ansari who is said to be involved in a case of murder and rioting in Mau.
The DGP and the Principal Home Secretary Alok Sinha in a joint press conference claimed that the compensation amounting to Rs. two lakh each had been given to the kith and kin of the deceased and essential commodities were being supplied in the curfew-bound areas. Curfew would be lifted after assessing the situation, Alok Sinha said.
On the other hand, the UP Governor T.V. Rajeswar is understood to have advised Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to order a judicial probe into the Mau riots. The Governor after his return from the riot-affected areas of Mau summoned the Chief Minister and held a prolonged discussion with him about the situation which he saw during his visit to the strife-torn areas.
The Governor visited the curfew-bound town and met several delegations to assess the situation. Concerned over the loss of the property during communal riots, he called upon the people to maintain communal harmony and amity. The Governor asked the officers to ensure peace in the town. A wailing woman broke the barricades and rushed to the Governor to tell him about the disaster in the sensitive town.
The Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has announced an inquiry to probe the role of Mukhtar Ansari into the communal riots and directed the DGP and the Principal Home Secretary Alok Sinha to submit a report about his role during riots.The DGP and Principal Home Secretary visited Mau to assess the situation and the alleged role of the MLA in the riots. The Chief Minister ordered another three-member high-level inquiry committee headed by the Mrs. Neera Yadav, the chairperson of the Board of Revenue, to probe the riots. Mulayam Singh has asked Neera Yadav to submit her report within three weeks. He has made it clear that he would not spare anyone whether he is a public representative or a political leader.
The Chief Minister admitted that seven persons were killed in the riots. Two bodies were found burnt and one found in a pond, he told newsmen in Lucknow. The Chief Minister said that he ordered suspension of DM, SP, Commissioner, DIG and a SHO as they despite having sufficient time failed to contain the communal clashes in the town. The Chief Minister turned down the demand of the BJP for deployment of the Army in Mau.
Representatives of the Congress, BJP, BSP, Rashtriya Janata Dal and traders’ organizations met the Governor in Mau and had detailed discussion with him. The national president of Mahila Congress Rita Bahuguna told the Governor about the utter administrative failure in controlling situation. Demanding the dismissal of the State Government, Ms Bahuguna asked for judicial probe by a sitting judge of the High Court. She said that the Governor had assured the delegation of adequate measures.
